"Success is a decision not a gift"
20 years of competing at the highest level in athletics has given Steve a tremendous experience of the pressures of competing against the best in the world. Steve has condensed this knowledge into a way that all areas of business can benefit from. He gives specific insights into how to get the best from yourself, work in a team, and how to deal with failure.
Steve has also moved successfully to televeision where he has appeared on a host of primetime TV shows including:
They think it's all over

"Steve Backley Started our day with a bang, great motivational speaker that connected with every age group in the room which as they ranged from 16 to 87 took some doing!"
Leigh Beard - Director of Corporate services NHS / PCT
"Steve gave an insightful presentation on how he was able to get the most from himself when under pressure. The messages were easily translated to a working environment"
Rob Wallis - National Association for Sports Development
"Having spent 20 years learning about training for a power and skill event, it seemed right to pass this information back on in as many areas as I possibly can. With my love for golf, I am delighted to have teamed up with Play Better Golf Magazine to deliver what I consider to be the best information on training your mind and body for sport, as well as how to deliver this effectively on the big day."
Steve has a thorough understanding of many areas of media work. He has developed this over the past 20 years working both within and away from the sporting arena.
Initially he learned through working with some of the best presenters sport has ever seen including a corporate training video with the late and great Ron Pickering, presenting to and on behalf of Blue chip companies as well as working alongside all aspects of the media in the high profile pressure of the Olympic games. Steve is also now part of the BBC team presenting athletics.
Steve swapped his javelin for a microphone, joining the BBC 5 Live commentary team for athletics in 2005, including the European Cup in Florence, and the World Championships in Helsinki.

‘I am delighted to be part of the BBC sports team presenting athletics this summer. Having watched many of the great athletes of the 90’s retire in recent years, we are amidst a new era of British athletes. To have the opportunity to watch and comment first hand on the development of these athletes alongside the pro’s at the BBC is a great honour.’
